Washington: Rakhi Israni Singh, candidate for California’s 14th Congressional District said that there was a need for fresh leadership in the national capital in order to govern effectively and bring about tangible change.

Israni, who is contesting from the Democratic Party, said that with lawmakers holding their seats for decades, a sense of “complacency” comes in.

“Because people are spending decades in Congress, there is this complacency in policymaking or problem solving, which is hurtful to the people on the ground,” Israni said.

Prior to taking the plunge into politics, Israni has been a non-profit lawyer and an educator. She has also been actively involved in community building activities for several years now.

Stating that there exists a reluctance to call out bad behavior, Israni, 52, said that such a perspective only ends up hurting constituents.

“We have seen it across the spectrum. This ultimately hurts the people in the district, and the families in the area that are trying to focus on their life, quality of lives and raising their families,” Israni said.

Israni said that it was important to have term limits for lawmakers and pave the way for a new set of leaders. The retirement age for lawmakers should be 75, Israni said.

“It is important to bring in fresh perspectives, look at a problem from a different lens and engage with stakeholders. The drive to solve problems should be constant in people representing us,” Israni said while adding that this approach can help in solving problems and make a difference on the ground.

As a first-time candidate, Israni said that she was ready to “restore decency” in the capital and that voters are tired of career politicians and demand accountability.

Israni said that stock trading by members of Congress and their families should be banned in order to remove complacency from the system. She said that lawmakers should not be permitted to profit from the positions they are in.

“In order to ensure that we are actually solving problems, it is imperative that we remove complacency from the system,” Israni said.

Having been a resident of East Bay for over two decades, Israni said that her approach towards an effective leadership will be to listen first, find common ground and deliver results. It is important to be the most effective and not necessarily the loudest, Israni said.

While the special elections to replace former Congressman Eric Swalwell are scheduled to be held on August 18, the Democratic primaries are set for June 16. The primary for the permanent seat will be held on June 2.
