Numbers wizard Mythily gets invite to famed math meet

Mythily Ramaswamy, a senior faculty associate at the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences, has been invited to speak at the 2026 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM).
According to an official post by ICTS on X, Ramaswamy will speak at the International Congress of Mathematicians 2026, scheduled to take place in Philadelphia from July 23 to 30.
The congress, organized by the International Mathematical Union, is held once every four years and is widely regarded as one of the highest-profile events in mathematics.

In an official statement, ICTS announced the news and wrote,
“ICTS congratulates Prof. Ramaswamy for this well-deserved recognition of her outstanding contributions to mathematics.”
Ramaswamy has served as a professor at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research’s Centre for Applicable Mathematics in Bengaluru, dean at TIFR CAM, an adjunct professor at Chennai Mathematical Institute and a NASI senior scientist at ICTS-TIFR.
Her research focuses on partial differential equations, control theory and fluid dynamics, with applications ranging from abstract mathematical theory to real-world systems such as fluid flow and blood circulation models.
Over the course of her career, she has made significant contributions to the analysis and controllability of differential equations, an area central to understanding complex physical systems.

Her work has explored topics including elliptic equations, Hamilton–Jacobi theory and the behavior of compressible fluid systems.
Born in 1954, Ramaswamy studied mathematics at the University of Bombay before pursuing doctoral studies at Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris, where she completed her PhD in 1990 under noted mathematician Henri Berestycki.
She has held several international academic positions, including postdoctoral research at the California Institute of Technology and visiting appointments in the United States and Europe.
Ramaswamy’s work has earned her numerous honors, including the Indian Academy of Sciences fellowship, the Kalpana Chawla Award and the P.C. Mahalanobis Medal, a lifetime achievement recognition for contributions to mathematics.
She has also been a Fulbright Program scholar.
Her visiting positions include Sofiya Kowalewsky visiting professor at the University of Kaiserslautern, Germany, and Fulbright-Nehru Academic Professional Excellence Fellow, awarded by the U.S.-India Education Foundation.
Ramaswamy has also been a visiting professor at the City University of New York and held a CNRS Poste Rouge visiting position at Toulouse University, France.
