B. Ravindran, a professor at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, has been appointed to the Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence, a newly established United Nations body tasked with assessing AI’s societal impact worldwide.
The 40-member panel was constituted through UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/79/325, which is a landmark resolution adopted on Aug. 26, 2025, that established the first global scientific body for AI, and envisioned under the Global Digital Compact.

It brings together leading experts from across regions and disciplines to strengthen global scientific cooperation and provide independent, evidence-based guidance on AI governance.
Ravindran currently serves as the head of the Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI at IIT Madras and is the founding head of the Centre for Responsible AI (CeRAI).
With over three decades of research spanning responsible AI and deep reinforcement learning, he is known for his contributions to building ethical and inclusive AI systems.
His appointment marks a significant milestone for India’s presence in global technology governance forums, underscoring the growing representation of the Global South in shaping international frameworks around emerging technologies.

Ravindran thanked the United Nations for the recognition and said,
“AI is a generational technology, and it is affecting everybody, sometimes knowingly and often, even without their knowledge, that their lives are being touched by AI.”
“So, the UN has now constituted an international panel of experts to look at the far-reaching implications of Artificial Intelligence. I am very honoured to be representing India in this panel of experts and the voice of the Global South,” he concluded.
The Independent International Scientific Panel on AI is the first global scientific body dedicated exclusively to evaluating artificial intelligence’s societal implications.
The panel’s objective is to provide scientific assessments to inform policymaking and international cooperation as AI technologies rapidly evolve.
