Pooja Sethi, a Democratic candidate for the Texas House of Representatives (District 47), responded to a post on X by right-wing political commentator Savanah Hernandez, saying her “heritage isn’t an insult” after Hernandez shared a photo of Sethi’s campaign sign and wrote, “Welcome to politics in Texas.”

Hernandez, a correspondent for Turning Point USA, took to X and posted a picture of a campaign board that read, “Pooja Sethi For Texas,” and wrote, “Welcome to politics in Texas” in the caption.

Sethi, an Indian-origin attorney, responded to Hernandez’s post by mentioning that her “story,” similar to most Americans, is “rooted in hard work” and wrote,

“My heritage isn’t an insult. It’s my story. And like millions of Americans, it’s rooted in hard work, faith in this country, and service to our community.”

“If that bothers you, that says more about you than it does about me,” the post concluded.

Sethi positioned her statement as a response to criticism of her background, pushing back against narratives that disparage people based on race or ethnicity, which has been a frequent occurrence in Texas in recent times.

Reactions to Sethi’s response have been mixed, with some applauding her affirmation of identity while others raised broader debates about politics, media influence, and issues of culture and immigration.
