A record 79 percent of Americans believe immigration positively impacts the United States, a recent poll revealed.

According to a new Gallup poll, the number of Americans who view immigration positively has increased by 15 points since last year, reversing a downward trend that persisted from 2021 to 2024.

“The recent jump in perceptions of immigration being a good thing is largely owed to a sharp increase among Republicans and, to a lesser extent, independents,” the Gallup analysis notes. Democrats' belief in immigration’s benefits is also at a record-high 91 percent.

Support for reduced immigration has decreased significantly, with Republican backing dropping by 40 percentage points, now standing at 48 percent. Independents show a 21-point decline, bringing their support down to 30 percent, while Democrats have seen a 12-point reduction, resulting in a current support level of 16 percent.

The poll also highlights declining support for enforcement-heavy policies. Backing for expanding the U.S.-Mexico border wall is now at 45 percent, down from 53 percent in 2024. Support for deporting all undocumented immigrants has dropped to 38 percent, down from 47 percent last year.

Conversely, 78 percent of Americans now support providing undocumented immigrants a pathway to citizenship — up from 70 percent — with support across all party groups, including a 13-point rise among Republicans.

Overall, Trump’s immigration policies remain unpopular. The poll finds that 62 percent of Americans disapprove of his handling of immigration, including 45 percent who strongly disapprove. Just 2 percent of Democrats and 28 percent of independents approve, while 85 percent of Republicans continue to support him on the issue.

The survey, conducted June 2–26 among 1,402 U.S. adults, also shows a significant drop in the number of Americans who want immigration decreased — down to 30 percent from 55 percent just a year ago.

Responding to the findings, Representative Pramila Jayapal wrote on X, “A record high 79 percent of Americans believe that immigration is good for our country. Yet Trump and Republicans continue vilifying immigrants, kidnapping and disappearing innocent people, and breaking the law. It must end.”
