Lehigh University appointed Indian American professor Anand Ramamurthi as associate dean for Global Engineering Initiatives at its P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science.
Ramamurthi, who previously served as chair of the university’s department of bioengineering for six years, will take on the newly created position focused on expanding international partnerships, strengthening global research collaborations and creating opportunities for students and faculty.

As associate dean, Ramamurthi will work with faculty and university leaders to develop the Rossin College’s global strategy and transnational education framework.
He will focus on partnerships with universities, industry and government organizations around the world, while expanding opportunities for students to participate in international learning, research and internship experiences, the university release stated.
“Anand has distinguished himself as a researcher, educator and academic leader, and he has already demonstrated the ability to build strong international relationships that benefit our students, faculty, and research enterprise,” Stephen P. DeWeerth, the Lew and Sherry Hay Dean of Engineering, said in a statement.
“As we continue to expand the college’s global partnerships, his experience and vision make him the right person to lead those efforts,” he added.
Ramamurthi joined Lehigh’s Rossin College in 2020 as chair of the department of bioengineering. During his tenure, he led a strategic transformation of the department, launching new academic programs, expanding graduate education, recruiting faculty and strengthening the department’s research enterprise. He also established international partnerships that expanded research collaboration.
Ramamurthi served as a provost faculty fellow during 2022-23, working to advance Lehigh’s partnerships and engagement in India. In 2025, he was named senior advisor for Global Strategy (India) in the Office of International Affairs, where he worked to strengthen the university’s engagement with India through partnerships with academic institutions, industry and other organizations.
“Engineering is a borderless discipline,” Ramamurthi said.
“The problems worth solving in health, energy, and intelligent systems don’t stop at any border. I’m excited to help Lehigh engage the world deliberately, carrying the Rossin College’s expertise into global markets that are established, growing, and newly emergent, and bringing back the perspectives and partnerships that make our research and our students stronger,” he added.
Ramamurthi is an internationally recognized researcher whose work focuses on tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. His laboratory develops biomaterials and therapeutic approaches to repair and regenerate connective tissues, with research aimed at improving treatments for conditions including aortic aneurysms and pelvic organ prolapse.
Earlier this year, he was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, one of the highest professional honors in the field.
Before joining Lehigh, Ramamurthi held faculty and research positions at Clemson University and the Cleveland Clinic. He served as a professor of biomedical engineering at the Cleveland Clinic’s Lerner Research Institute and as a professor of molecular medicine at Case Western Reserve University. He previously held assistant and associate professor positions in bioengineering at Clemson University.
Ramamurthi earned his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Oklahoma State University and also studied at RV College of Engineering in India. He subsequently completed a two-year American Heart Association postdoctoral fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic.
