Krishnamoorthi moves to curb Trump’s emergency election powers
Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi argued that Trump cannot override the Constitution and seize control of American elections.

Amid reports of U.S. President Donald Trump pushing for a major power grab over executive election control, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi is seeking to tackle the situation legislatively by introducing the Free Elections Act.
Earlier today, The Washington Post reported that allies of the president, who claim to be in coordination with Trump, are circulating a 17-page executive order that would allow the president to declare a national emergency over claims of foreign interference, akin to alleged Chinese interference in the 2020 election. This would allegedly allow the president to unlock extraordinary presidential power over voting, effectively empowering Trump to ban mail-in ballots and certain voting machines in the November midterms.

While no such executive order has been announced by the Trump administration, Rep. Krishnamoorthi clarified his position and said on X, “President Trump cannot declare an ‘emergency’ to override the Constitution and seize control of American elections.”
He added, “The framers divided power precisely to prevent any one person from manipulating the rules of voting for political advantage. Free and fair elections are the bedrock of our democracy and the source of the government’s legitimacy.”
He concluded his statement by highlighting that his Free Elections Act would ensure that “emergency authorities cannot be abused to rewrite election rules or override the will of the American people.”
