Indian-origin group arrested in Canada drug theft probe

The York Regional Police’s Auto Cargo Theft Unit has charged five men with Indian roots following the recovery of over $2 million in stolen cannabis products and two illegal firearms, York police shared on April 29.

The Auto Cargo Theft Unit got involved in the cannabis case after they located a stolen trailer in the area of McLaughlin Road and Highway 401, in the City of Mississauga, on April 15.

Upon closer inspection, they discovered a large amount of cannabis products, intended to be delivered to numerous dispensaries.

The suspects had allegedly stolen the trailer containing cannabis products, the York police reported.

The police proceeded to identify the five individuals associated with the stolen trailer and placed them under arrest, upon which two firearms were found on their person.

In a news release, the suspects were identified as 21-year-old Manveer Singh, 32-year-old Sarbjeet Singh, 21-year-old Dilkhab Singh, 25-year-old Karan Kumar and 23-year-old Jaiskavan Malhi.

All suspects except Kumar are Brampton residents, police said. Karan Kumar is a resident of Hamilton.

The suspects have been charged with theft over $5,000 – motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, trafficking in property obtained by crime, possession of unloaded firearm, possession of restricted firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized and unauthorized possession of firearm in motor vehicle.

They are facing a combined 33 theft and firearm-related charges.

Police also noted that there may be additional victims and are asking anyone with information to contact them or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
