The Indian Institute of Technology, Indian School of Mines (IIT-ISM) Dhanbad, has conferred its Special Centenary Award on distinguished Indian-American alumnus Mohinder Singh Gulati, recognizing his contributions to the global energy sector and his longstanding association with the institute.

The award was presented at Gulati's residence in the United States by university director Sukumar Mishra and dean (alumni affairs) Rajeev Upadhyay as part of the institute's centenary year celebrations.

Gulati, who graduated with a bachelor's degree in petroleum engineering in 1962, is recognized internationally for his work in geothermal energy. After graduating at the top of his class from the then Indian School of Mines, he earned a master's degree and doctorate from Stanford University before leading geothermal energy projects in the United States, Indonesia and the Philippines.

The institute said Gulati's contributions to the field have earned him international recognition, including Stanford University's Geothermal Reservoir Engineer Award. He also received IIT (ISM)'s Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2020.

Alongside the centenary honor, the University announced that Gulati has pledged approximately $1 million dollars (Rs 10 crore) toward the construction of a Multi-Purpose Convention Hall in the institute's upcoming Centenary Building. The institute described the contribution as one of the largest alumni donations in its history.

In a video message released by the institute, Gulati reflected on joining the Indian School of Mines in 1958 and recalled the transformation of the institution during his years as a student. He said the education he received at ISM provided a strong academic foundation that made graduate-level petroleum engineering courses at Stanford comparatively easy.

According to a statement, the convention hall will form part of the new Centenary Building and support future academic, professional and community events at the institute.
