IIT Kharagpur honors alumnus Vinod Gupta during Platinum Jubilee celebrations
He was honored because of his overall contributions to entrepreneurship, philanthropy, and higher education, with particular recognition for establishing the Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSoM).

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur recognized Indian-American entrepreneur and alumnus Vinod Gupta during its Platinum Jubilee celebrations, citing his contributions to institute philanthropy as part of its Alumni Legacy Series.
Gupta, who graduated from IIT Kharagpur in 1967, subsequently relocated to the United States, where he established several business database and information services companies, including infoUSA, DatabaseUSA, and InfoFree.com. InfoUSA eventually grew into a major market research and data provider, reporting annual revenues exceeding $750 million.
In 1993, Gupta donated $2 million to IIT Kharagpur to establish the Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSoM). The move established the first full-fledged business school within the engineering-oriented IIT network, integrating management, technology, and data analytics into the institute's curriculum.

In an official statement released during the event, IIT Kharagpur director Suman Chakraborty noted that Gupta’s 1993 endowment expanded the institute’s academic framework beyond conventional engineering disciplines and helped establish a broader culture of alumni giving within Indian higher education.
Gupta stated that his undergraduate education at IIT Kharagpur was instrumental in shaping his corporate career, while emphasizing the role of alumni support in expanding institutional infrastructure.
“IIT Kharagpur changed the course of my life. The education I received and the friendships I formed gave me the confidence to pursue opportunities that seemed impossible at the time. It is deeply meaningful to be recognized during the Institute’s Platinum Jubilee, and I hope my journey inspires future generations of students to dream boldly, build with purpose, and always remember the importance of giving back,” Gupta said.
Beyond his contributions to IIT Kharagpur, Gupta has funded various educational and vocational initiatives in India and the United States, primarily focusing on primary education, vocational training, and women’s empowerment programs.
