Dr. Zafar Iqbal is a retired senior scientific review officer and health science specialist with the U.S. Department of Veterans Health Administration. He holds a Ph.D. in Physiology from the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and completed his postdoctoral training at Indiana University. Throughout his career, he has held academic and research appointments at Northwestern University, Indiana University, and Chicago Medical School.
Dr. Iqbal has authored more than 35 peer-reviewed scientific papers in leading journals such as Science, Journal of Neurochemistry, and Neuroendocrinology, contributed to over 30 invited book chapters; and edited the volume Axoplasmic Transport. He has been an invited speaker and organizer at major international scientific conferences across North America, Europe, and Asia.
A recipient of numerous honors and research awards—including from NIH, NSF, and VA Medical Research—Dr. Iqbal has served on editorial boards and peer review panels for prestigious journals, including Neurochemical Research, Brain Research, and Journal of Neurobiology. He is affiliated with several professional organizations, including the American Physiological Society, the American Society for Biological Chemistry, the Society for Neuroscience, and the International Society for Neurochemistry.
In addition to his scientific contributions, Dr. Iqbal is actively engaged in cultural and community organizations, including the Aligarh Alumni Association of Washington, DC, the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO), the Ameer Khusrau Society of America, the National Council of Indian Associations in America, and the Indian Cultural Coordination Committee. He has been recognized in Who’s Who in America, Notable Americans, and American Men & Women of Science for his professional and civic achievements.
