Hundreds gather in Chicago to observe International Day of Yoga

Nearly 400 yoga practitioners and enthusiasts gathered at the National India Hub in Schaumburg, Illinois, to celebrate the 12th International Day of Yoga, organized by the Consulate General of India in Chicago.

The event marked this year’s global theme, “Yoga for Healthy Aging," and brought together participants from diverse communities across the U.S. Midwest. 

Consul General Somnath Ghosh inaugurated the celebration, highlighting yoga’s growing global relevance and its role in promoting physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

Addressing attendees, Ghosh described yoga as one of India’s most enduring cultural traditions and emphasized that it extends beyond physical exercise to represent a holistic way of life. He said yoga continues to unite people across countries, cultures and faiths while encouraging harmony between individuals and the environment.

The celebration featured a demonstration of the Common Yoga Protocol led by yoga instructors Anu Malhotra, Mara Zimmerman, Pam Brockman, Vidya Nahar and Saba Haider. Participants joined in guided sessions that transformed the venue into a vibrant gathering focused on health and mindfulness.

The event received support from organizations including the State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, the Asian American Store Owner Association and Indian Diaspora Connect. Several community groups also participated, including Art of Living Chicago, Sewa International USA, Isha Foundation, Brahma Kumaris, Heartfulness, Sahaja Yoga and the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh.

Beyond the Chicago-area event, the Consulate supported International Day of Yoga celebrations across its jurisdiction, including programs in Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana and Minnesota. Events were held at universities, temples, cultural centers and community venues, attracting thousands of participants throughout the Midwest.

The annual observance, recognized by the United Nations, continues to promote yoga as a practice that supports health, wellness and community engagement worldwide. Organizers said this year’s celebrations demonstrated yoga’s enduring appeal and its ability to bring people together across diverse backgrounds.
