The University of Tennessee Health Science Center has appointed Indian American physician Tejesh Patel as chair of the College of Medicine's Department of Pathology.
Patel, who chairs the Kaplan-Amonette Department of Dermatology, had served as interim chair of the pathology department since March 2024. According to the new announcement he will now lead both departments.
He will also continue overseeing the dermatology department's clinical practice through University Clinical Health, which provides comprehensive dermatologic care for patients across the Mid-South.

“Being both a dermatologist and dermatopathologist, I am able to see firsthand the vital role pathology has in clinical practice and patient care. Leading both departments as chair is not only an honor but an opportunity to deepen collaborations and advance innovations that strengthen clinical care. I look forward to building on the strengths of both departments as we expand the impact of our College of Medicine,” Patel said in a statement.
One of the few physicians in the United States trained and board-certified in both dermatology and dermatopathology, Patel brings expertise spanning patient care and diagnostic pathology. University officials said his dual training positions him to strengthen collaboration between the two specialties while advancing education, research and clinical innovation.
“Dr. Patel is an exceptional physician, educator and leader, who has earned the trust and respect of colleagues across our university. I’m confident that his experience bridging these clinical disciplines will help him lead both departments well,” said Michael Hocker, executive dean of the College of Medicine.
Patel completed an internal medicine internship and dermatology residency at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center before pursuing fellowships at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia. He joined the faculty in 2012.
A Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, Patel has authored or co-authored more than 70 medical publications, book chapters and scientific presentations. In 2018, the Memphis Business Journal recognized him among its Top 40 Under 40 for his professional accomplishments and community leadership.
