Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) members met with U.S. Rep. Lou Correa, (D-CA), to discuss key issues affecting hotel owners and small businesses.

The Aug. 14 meeting, held at the home of Greater Los Angeles Area Regional Director GJ Zala, focused on increasing the Small Business Administration’s lending limit and proposed ADA legislation that would create a cure period before a lawsuit can be filed.

South Pacific Regional Directors Nilesh (Neil) Bhakta and Zala, along with several AAHOA ambassadors, joined Correa for the discussion. Correa expressed support for both initiatives and said he was interested in helping address concerns facing small businesses and the hospitality industry, according to AAHOA.

In May, AAHOA welcomed an SBA policy allowing eligible borrowers to combine 7(a) and 504 loans for up to $10 million in SBA-backed financing, while arguing that the lodging industry should also receive greater lending flexibility.

Under the policy, which took effect July 4, eligible borrowers can access up to $5 million through the 7(a) program and up to $5 million through the 504 program, for a combined $10 million. The SBA said the change increased the cumulative financing limit from $5 million and was intended to provide more capital for businesses seeking to invest in real estate, equipment, working capital and expansion.

The association, however, is pushing for a broader increase. AAHOA supports the bipartisan STRONG Act, which would raise the maximum loan limits for both the SBA’s 7(a) and 504 programs to $10 million each. AAHOA has said higher limits would better address the development, renovation and financing costs faced by hotel owners.
