Indian-origin man dies in custody at Florida jail
Chintan Shah was found unresponsive in his cell during a morning inspection.

An Indian-origin man died on Aug. 13 while in custody at the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office Department of the Jail in Florida, authorities said.
Chintan Shah, 40, was found unresponsive in his cell at 7:23 a.m. on Aug. 13 during a morning cell inspection, according to the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office.

Shah was housed alone and was found in bed, the sheriff’s office said. Detention officers immediately activated a “Code Blue” and began life-saving efforts, including CPR and the use of an automated external defibrillator.
Emergency medical personnel arrived at 7:31 a.m. and took over the resuscitation efforts. Despite efforts by detention officers, jail medical staff and emergency personnel, Shah could not be revived. He was pronounced dead at 7:42 a.m.
The sheriff’s office said Shah’s next of kin has been notified.
The agency’s Criminal Investigations Division responded to the jail to conduct an investigation into the death. The sheriff’s office said such an investigation is standard procedure for any death occurring inside the jail and will take place alongside an internal investigation by the Office of Professional Standards.
The circumstances surrounding Shah’s death have not been disclosed. The sheriff’s office said the information released so far is preliminary and may change as the investigation continues and additional facts become available.
