Indian American medical professor Shilpa S. Murthy received a $1.1 million Career Development Award from the U.S. Department of Defense to study early-onset colorectal cancer mortality among military veterans.

The award supports Murthy’s research project, “From Service to Survival: Investigating the Association Between Military Deployment and Early-Onset Colorectal Cancer Mortality in Veterans,” which examines why survival outcomes for younger patients with colorectal cancer are poorer in the veteran population.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, and rates of early-onset colorectal cancer—diagnosed before the age of 50—have been increasing.

Murthy’s study focuses on whether military deployment is associated with higher mortality among veterans diagnosed with early-onset colorectal cancer. The research will examine potential contributors, including military-related exposures, combat stressors and other coexisting clinical conditions.

It combines qualitative storytelling from veterans with machine-learning approaches to develop a clinical risk prediction tool aimed at identifying veterans at higher risk and enabling earlier intervention and tailored care strategies.

The funding is provided through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs’ 2025 Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program Career Development Award—Scholar Option, which supports independent research by highly accomplished early-career investigators.

Murthy is an early-career investigator at Yale Cancer Center and an assistant professor of surgery in the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery and Medical Oncology.

Her clinical practice includes general and colorectal surgery at the West Haven Veterans Affairs Hospital in Connecticut, and her research is focused on improving cancer care delivery for veterans and other vulnerable patient populations.
