Indian American neurosurgeon, medical reporter and writer Sanjay Gupta was named keynote speaker for HMP Global’s 2026 Rx and Illicit Drug Summit, scheduled for April 6–9 in Nashville, Tennessee.
Gupta, who serves as CNN’s chief medical correspondent will deliver a keynote address on science-based approaches to treating pain without dependence, at a time when chronic pain and addiction remain major public health challenges in the United States.

The Rx Summit is described by the organizer as the nation’s most influential multidisciplinary conference focused on the opioid and addiction crisis, bringing together clinicians, researchers, policymakers, law enforcement and recovery professionals.
Gupta’s keynote will examine how advances in neuroscience and a growing understanding of the brain–body connection are reshaping approaches to pain management and addiction care.
“Pain is one of the most misunderstood conditions in medicine,” Gupta said in a statement. “We now know that the brain and body are deeply connected, and that treatment must address both. Science shows us that we can relieve suffering without creating new harm.”
Gupta’s address will draw on themes from his 2025 book, It Doesn’t Have to Hurt: Your Smart Guide to a Pain-Free Life, which focuses on integrative and evidence-based strategies to manage pain while reducing reliance on opioids.
The four-day summit will be held at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center in Nashville. HMP Global said the event will also feature sessions on prevention, treatment and long-term recovery, reflecting the evolving response to the opioid crisis.
