USA became the second team after co-host Mexico to make the round of 32 in the FIFA World Cup 2026. Like Mexico, the US continued its winning spree, defeating Australia 2-0 for its second successive win from as many matches.
Earlier, Mexico with wins against teams from “South” – Africa and Korea – had become the first team to make the round of 32.

Interestingly, all the three co-hosts have maintained their slates clean at the end of second round of Group matches. While USA and Mexico have recorded a maximum of two wins each, Canada has a win and a draw.
Canada, the third co-host is also on the threshold of making the round of 32 as it sits at the head of its group with a draw and a win, and awaits its last crucial game against Switzerland.
Incidentally, Switzerland, like Canada, has four points but sits at number two position. The Swiss have scored fewer goals than Canada. Bosnia Herzegovina and Qatar are the other teams in the group.
In its second game against Australia, the United States made a repeat start of its opening game against Paraguay. A self-goal by Paraguay had given the hosts the much needed lead and a good start. It happened again today as the home team took the lead when Cameron Burgess turned Folarin Balogun’s pass into his own net.
Alex Freeman then made sure of the three points when he nodded in Sergino Dest’s deflected strike.
