When chatting with a film actor, you normally talk about their career, their hits and flops, the friends and freaks. But not about life in prison, do you?
That’s what happened at the NDTV Yuva Conclave recently in Mumbai, where actor Rhea Chakraborty was the star attraction.
The session was titled "Unbroken: Writing the Next Chapter", according to the NDTV website, which quoted Rhea saying, “You miss a lot of things in jail. You realise what you had in life when you thought you had nothing. In there, you truly have nothing. There's no Swiggy or Zomato.”
Oh, no, this isn’t a scene from an upcoming film of hers. She really did go to jail.
This is how it happened. It began with the strange death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput in June 2020. Ruled a suicide initially, the death got embroiled in controversies, including accusing Rhea of abetment to suicide, even financial irregularities.
That September, Rhea was arrested on charges of procuring drugs for Sushant. She was behind bars in a Mumbai jail till she got bail in October. But all charges were eventually dropped and she got a clean chit in March 2025.
She turned philosophical after the experience. She told the Conclave, as per the website, “You begin to ask yourself what really matters, who you really are. I was 27 at the time, and I thought, who am I as a person? I am not a heroine, just a girl. You start valuing food more. Simple home-cooked dal and rice feel far more important than pizza.”
