A group of influential lawmakers have introduced legislation authorising sanctions on Pakistani officials accused of undermining democracy and committing human rights abuses, escalating congressional scrutiny of the South Asian nation’s political turmoil.

The measure, introduced as H.R. 5271 by Rep. Bill Huizenga, Republican of Michigan and chair of the House Subcommittee on South and Central Asia, is co-led by the panel’s ranking Democrat, Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove of California.
