President Donald Trump on Oct. 14 posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom — the nation's highest civilian honour — to conservative firebrand and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated last month while addressing students in what Trump called a "heinous, demonic act of murder."

The Rose Garden of the White House, newly refurbished, served as the backdrop for the moving ceremony held on what would have been Kirk's 32nd birthday.
