The British Columbia Supreme Court has found three Indian-Origin men guilty of the murder of Canadian couple Arnold and Joanne De Jong, in Abbotsford.

The sentenced, Gurkaran Singh, Abhijeet Singh and Khushveer Toor, allegedly played a willing and integral role in the couple’s murder in 2022, as per a report by CBC News.

The three men allegedly jointly planned to rob and kill the couple. The trio went on to steal credit cards, cheques and a power washer from the house.

The trio were first introduced to the De Jong couple after alleged co-conspirator Abhijeet Singh’s company carried out work at their home. The other two sentenced individuals also worked for Abhijeet Singh’s company.

The accused, all in their 20s, pleaded not guilty to two counts each of first-degree murder at the beginning of the trial.

The couple was discovered dead in separate bedrooms. Arnold’s head and face were wrapped in duct tape, while Joanne had blood around her. Both had their hands and feet bound with rope.

Crown prosecutor William Dorsey, during his closing submissions in March, told Justice Brown that the men worked together to plan the murders and take the De Jongs’ money.

Defence lawyers disputed that the killings were planned, telling the court during their closing submissions that the circumstantial evidence does not prove premeditated murder and the incident was a robbery attempt gone wrong. However, the court rejected this theory in its final order.

The court also refused to dissect the crime into which individual did what act and chose to treat the incident as a joint crime and noted that the three individuals shared "equal culpability."

Sentencing for Toor, Gurkaran Singh and Abhijeet Singh is scheduled for May 28.
