Texas Governor Greg Abbott appointed Indian American internist Padmaja Patel to the state’s nutrition advisory committee.
The appointment is part of a broader slate of selections announced by the governor’s office to the committee, which is established to develop nutritional guidelines for residents of Texas.

A resident of Midland, Patel was appointed for a term set to expire on Sept. 1, 2029. She currently serves as chief medical officer at Nudj Health and is president of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine.
She also serves as president of the Midland Quality Alliance and has held multiple leadership and advisory roles focused on healthcare quality, value-based care, and lifestyle medicine.
Patel’s experience includes designing and implementing lifestyle medicine–based care models aimed at chronic disease prevention, treatment, and remission, delivered through both in-person and virtual programs.
Her professional affiliations include the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, and the American Association of Physician Leaders. She has served on national advisory bodies, including the National Quality Forum’s professional advisory council and the Endorsement and Maintenance Committee of the Partnership for Quality Measurement.
Patel has also been associated with the Texas Medical Association as a consultant committee member and with the Primary Care Collaborative, contributing to initiatives related to healthcare delivery, quality improvement, and population health.
Her contributions have been recognized with the fellowship of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine and the 2023 AMWA Inspire Award.
Patel received a premedical degree from Vitthalbhai Patel & Rajratna P. T. Patel Science College, India and earned her Doctor of Medicine in Internal Medicine from the University of Missouri.
She is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine, including certification as a Lifestyle Medicine Intensivist.
In addition to Patel, the Governor appointed Cheryl Sew Hoy, Jaclyn Albin, and Kathleen Davis to the committee for terms ending in 2029. Ann Shippy, Commissioner Sid Miller, and Natalie Bachynsky, were appointed to terms expiring in 2027.
