Sandhu Ponnachan charged in UK after car hits seven pedestrians

Ponnachan was remanded in custody and was subsequently presented to the Southern Derbyshire Magistrates Court on April 1.

Indian-origin man Sandhu Ponnachan, 36, was arrested in the United Kingdom for allegedly mowing down and injuring seven pedestrians with his car on March 28.

Driving a Suzuki Swift, Ponnachan hit the pedestrians with his car at Friar Gate and was then arrested by Derbyshire police.

The Chariot Close, Alvaston, resident has now been charged with six counts of Grievous Bodily Harm with intent, one count of attempted Grievous Bodily Harm with intent, one count of dangerous driving, and one count of possession of a bladed article.

The accused was remanded in custody and was subsequently presented to the Southern Derbyshire Magistrates Court on April 1.

Chief Superintendent of the Derbyshire Constabulary, Emma Aldred, said in a statement, “This incident has, naturally, sent shockwaves through the community of Derby and the county as a whole.

Aldred continued, “My thoughts, and those of the wider force, remain with each of the seven injured people, their families, and witnesses at the scene.

Janine McKinney of the Crown Prosecution Service announced the decision to prosecute Ponnachan. She noted, "Our prosecutors have worked to establish that there is sufficient evidence to bring the case to court and that it is in the public interest to pursue criminal proceedings."

The seven injured were taken to the hospital with serious but non life-threatening injuries. Four people were released from the hospital before Sandhu was presented to the court.
