Indian-American finance professional Shuchita Patel announced her candidacy for Forsyth County Commissioner-District 3, entering the race for a seat on the county’s five-member Board of Commissioners.

In a social media post, Patel said she decided to run after living in North Georgia for more than three decades and raising her family in Forsyth County.

“I moved to Georgia when I was 7. I went to school here, built my career here, and I’m raising my kids here. This county is my home—and because it’s my home, I refuse to accept a county government that doesn’t work for everyone in it,” she wrote.

In her announcement, Patel said the county’s rapid population growth has created challenges for residents. Her campaign will focus on affordable housing, living wages and broader representation in local government.

“Forsyth County is growing fast. But that growth is working for developers a lot better than it’s working for the families who actually live and work here,” she wrote. “Working families shouldn’t be priced out of the county they built,” Patel said, adding that “hard work should be enough to build a life.”

The first-generation American and graduate of Georgia State University credited her parents’ immigration story for shaping her views on work and community. “My parents came to this country with a dream, and I grew up watching them build something from nothing,” she said.

Born in Detroit, Patel moved with her family to Alpharetta in 1993. She later built a career in finance, working in leadership roles focused on budgeting, fiscal oversight and long-term planning.

Patel said that experience informs her approach to governance and fiscal management. “Our county is growing quickly. Growth brings opportunity, but it also demands thoughtful leadership,” she said, calling for responsible budgeting, transparent decision-making and long-term planning.

Patel also cited representation as a reason for entering the race.“As a South Asian woman raising children here, I understand how important it is for every family to feel seen, safe, and included in the community they call home,” she said.

“This campaign is about steady leadership, strong oversight, and building a county where every family has the opportunity to thrive,” she said.

Forsyth County, located in North Georgia, is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners elected from single-member districts for four-year terms. District 3 includes areas southwest of the city of Cumming.

The election will take place during Georgia’s 2026 election cycle, with the primary scheduled for May 19, followed by a runoff on June 16 if required. The general election is set for Nov. 3.
