Mahaveer Singhvi appointed CGI Toronto

Senior diplomat brings legal, financial and strategic expertise to the role.

The Consulate General of India in Toronto announced the appointment of Indian diplomat Mahaveer Singhvi as the new consul general of India in Toronto.

Singhvi was recently elevated as additional secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs and previously served as joint secretary in the ministry.

The post had remained vacant for an extended period, with senior diplomat Kapidhwaja Pratap Singh serving as acting consul general.

Pratap, a dean’s list scholar from the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, was appointed acting consul general in late 2024 after joining the consulate earlier that year as head of commerce and political affairs.

Announcing the appointment, the Consulate said in a post on X, “The Consulate General of India in Toronto is pleased to announce that Mr. @MahavirSinghvii has taken over as the new consul general of India in Toronto.”

It added, “His appointment comes at an important moment to further strengthen and elevate the India-Canada relationship, with a focus on deepening cooperation across trade, technology, education and innovation.”



Widely recognized for his multidisciplinary expertise, Singhvi brings a blend of legal, financial and strategic experience to India’s foreign policy apparatus.

He holds a master’s degree in diplomatic studies, international law and international relations from the University of Oxford, along with a law degree from the University of Delhi and a chartered accountant qualification from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.

Highlighting his background, the Consulate said, “With a diverse professional background as a diplomat, lawyer, chartered accountant, company secretary, MBA and cost and management accountant, Mr. Singhvi has extensive experience in strategic, economic and global affairs, as well as bilateral and multilateral engagement.”

It added that Singhvi looks forward to working closely with Canadian stakeholders and the Indian diaspora to strengthen mutual trust, expand partnerships and build a forward-looking relationship rooted in shared values and opportunities.
