Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Jan. 15 said he had spoken with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to seek assurances on the safety of students from the union territory currently studying in Iran amid the evolving security situation there.
Sharing details of the conversation on X, Abdullah said Jaishankar briefed him on the ground situation and the plans being worked out by the Ministry of External Affairs.

“Just spoke to EAM about the evolving situation in Iran. He shared his assessment of the ground situation & the plans that the External Affairs Ministry is working on,” Abdullah wrote. “I’m grateful for his assurance that all steps will be taken to safeguard the interests & lives of students & other people from J&K who are in Iran now.”
Thousands of Indian students, including a large number from Jammu and Kashmir, are currently in Iran, triggering anxiety among families as tensions persist in the region. Many of the students from the Valley are pursuing medical and other professional courses, including MBBS.
Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti also appealed to Jaishankar and the External Affairs Ministry to intervene urgently.
“Thousands of students from across the country including Kashmir are stranded in Iran amid the present volatile situation,” Mufti said on X. “This has triggered deep fear and anxiety with anguished parents desperately worried about their children’s safety. Urge @DrSJaishankar and @MEAIndia to intervene urgently and ensure their safe return.”
In addition to students, several residents of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly from the Shia community, travel to Iran annually to visit religious shrines and historical sites. Reports indicate that dozens of Kashmiri Shia pilgrims are currently in Iran, with families back home awaiting their safe return.
