New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on June 11 announced an expanded partnership between city agencies and LinkNYC that will provide real-time directions to nearby cooling centers through more than 2,200 public kiosks as dangerous heat conditions grip the city.

The announcement comes as heat indices in New York City are expected to approach 100 degrees through June 12 , prompting city officials to activate hundreds of cooling centers to help residents stay safe.

Under the initiative, LinkNYC kiosks will automatically display walking directions to the nearest cooling center within a 10-minute walk during heat emergencies. The kiosks will update in real time using data from the city’s Cool Options Finder, ensuring that information reflects the latest cooling center openings and closures.

“In an emergency, information can save lives. Extreme heat becomes deadly fast, and New Yorkers — especially seniors, working people and families without reliable air conditioning — are vulnerable when temperatures soar. By turning thousands of LinkNYC kiosks into real-time guides to cooling centers, we’re using public technology to connect people with the resources they need to stay safe,” said Mayor Mamdani.

The effort builds on a warming center campaign launched last winter, which city officials described as the largest public service initiative in LinkNYC’s 10-year history. The new system incorporates automated data integration and real-time updates to improve access to critical information during heat emergencies.

Nick Colvin, chief executive officer of LinkNYC, said the partnership demonstrates how technology can be used to address public safety challenges.

“By partnering directly with City agencies, LinkNYC is helping to deliver timely, location-specific information to New Yorkers exactly when and where they need it,” Colvin said.

New York City Emergency Management Commissioner Christina Farrell described extreme heat as the city’s deadliest weather-related emergency and stressed the importance of ensuring residents are aware of available cooling centers.

Officials from the Office of Technology and Innovation also welcomed the initiative, saying it will help residents and visitors access potentially life-saving information as temperatures rise across the city.
