Gordon Research Conference has selected Indian-American academic and scientist Nithya Gnanapragasam to deliver a keynote address at the Gordon Research Seminar on Red Cells.
The prestigious international gathering, held in conjunction with the Gordon Research Conference on Red Cells, will take place June 12-13, 2027, in Newport, Rhode Island.
The seminar will focus on “Emerging Perspectives in Red Cell Biology: From Fundamental Mechanisms to Novel Technologies,” examining advances in erythropoiesis and red cell research.
Gnanapragasam, an associate professor of biology, geology and environmental sciences, and member of the Center for Gene Regulation in Health and Disease (GRHD) at Cleveland State University was selected by the co-chairs of the Gordon Research Conference on Red Cells and trainees leading the Gordon Research Seminar, recognizing her contributions and expertise in red blood cell research.

“I could not believe it. It feels like an honor to be able to contribute to the field and to the next generation of trainees,” Gnanapragasam said in a statement.
In her keynote, she plans to discuss her latest research and trace her professional journey from her doctoral studies and postdoctoral fellowship to her current faculty position. She also hopes to offer guidance to emerging researchers navigating the challenges and uncertainties of academic careers.
Gnanapragasam's laboratory at CSU studies the molecular mechanisms governing red blood cell production and hemoglobin synthesis. While the research is rooted in basic biology, its findings could help identify potential therapeutic targets for conditions including sickle cell anemia and beta thalassemia.
Gnanapragasam said CSU's research environment and the involvement of undergraduate and graduate students have supported her work. She also cited opportunities for faculty and students to present at major international meetings, including the Gordon Research Conference, the American Society of Hematology annual meeting and Hemoglobin Switching meetings.
“Apart from learning about our work on hemoglobin regulation in red blood cells, I hope that next generation of trainees who attend this meeting will gain perspectives on navigating through the ups and downs and uncertainties in research career, and identify strategies that can aid their journey towards an independent research career in academia,” said Gnanapragasm.
Gnanapragasam holds a Ph.D. in human and molecular genetics from Virginia Commonwealth University, a Master of Science in human/medical genetics from Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute and a Bachelor of Science in zoology/animal biology from Stella Maris College, Chennai.
