Nishesh Basavareddy wins maiden Grand Slam match

Basavareddy made his ATP debut in 2025 and also reached a career-high No. 99 in the previous year.

Indian-origin American tennis player Nishesh Basavareddy secured a win in his maiden Grand Slam main draw match by defeating Australian Christopher O'Connell in a five-set marathon on Jan. 20.

The 20-year-old beat O’Connell 4–6, 7–6, 6–7, 6–2, 6–3 in the men's singles first-round match at the Australian Open 2026 at the ANZ Arena in Melbourne Park.

This victory comes a year after Basavareddy won a set on his Grand Slam main-draw debut against Novak Djokovic in Melbourne. He also featured in the main draw of Wimbledon and the U.S. Open last term, where he exited in the first round.

Basavareddy, ranked 242, is now pitted against 15th seed Karen Khachanov in the second-round encounter in Melbourne.

He was born in Newport Beach, California, in 2005 to Indian parents Sai Prasanna and Muralikrishna Basavareddy. His parents, originally from Nellore in Andhra Pradesh, moved to the United States in 1999, initially staying in San Francisco before shifting to Southern California.
