Indian tennis player Yuki Bhambri has made history by reaching the semifinal of the US Open men’s doubles for the first time in his career on Sept. 3.
The 33-year-old, playing alongside Michael Venus from New Zealand, scored a big win in New York.

Bhambri and Venus defeated the experienced pair of Nikola Mektic from Croatia and Rajeev Ram from the United States. The match was played in three sets, with Bhambri and Venus winning 6-3, 7-6, 6-3. Their teamwork and sharp play helped them stay ahead against the 11th-seeded duo, who came into the match as favorites.
This victory is especially significant for Bhambri, who is currently India’s top-ranked doubles player in the world at No. 32. Although he has played Grand Slams before, this is the first time he has reached the last four. Last year, he partnered France’s Albano Olivetti and reached the pre-quarterfinals, falling to the seasoned pair of Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos.
Now, Bhambri and Venus will face Britain’s Neal Skupski and Joe Salisbury in the semifinal. Salisbury is a former champion who has won the US Open doubles title three times, making this a tough challenge for the Indo-Kiwi pair.
Bhambri’s achievement comes in a year when other Indian players, including veterans Rohan Bopanna and Arjun Kadhe, exited early in New York. Bopanna and partner Romain Arneodo lost in the opening round, while Kadhe and Anirudh Chandrasekar also bowed out in the early stages.
If Bhambri and Venus win their upcoming match, they will advance to the final to compete for the championship, a milestone that no Indian player has previously achieved in men’s doubles at the US Open.
