U.S. President Donald Trump on Jan. 20 said he had saved millions of lives by brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan last year.

Trump’s comments came as he addressed the media on the first anniversary of his second term in office.

“They (India and Pakistan) were really going at it. Eight planes (were) shot down. They were going to go nuclear, in my opinion. The prime minister of Pakistan was here and he said, ‘President Trump saved 10 million people and maybe much more than that.’ They are both nuclear countries,” Trump said.

While Trump has made similar claims earlier, the Indian government has consistently maintained that there was no third-party mediation during Operation Sindoor.

In a statement issued on June 18, 2025, the Indian government said, “The discussion to cease military action took place directly between India and Pakistan through the existing channels of communication between the two armed forces, and it was initiated at Pakistan’s request. Prime Minister Modi firmly stated that India does not and will never accept mediation.”

During Jan. 20 press briefing, which lasted close to two hours, Trump repeated the claim at least twice.

Responding to a reporter’s question about the significance of the Nobel Peace Prize, Trump again referred to his role in ending what he described as at least eight wars worldwide.

“If you look at India and Pakistan (war), that could have been 15 or 20 million people — could have been more than that. So, I saved millions of lives. So that, to me, is the big thing,” Trump said.

In a press release titled “365 wins in 365 days: President Trump’s return marks new era of success, prosperity,” the administration listed brokering “peace between India and Pakistan” as one of its achievements.

India launched Operation Sindoor following a terrorist attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people. The four-day conflict saw cross-border strikes by both sides.

In the June statement, India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said, “Prime Minister Modi told President Trump clearly that during this period, there was no talk at any stage on subjects like an India-U.S. trade deal or U.S. mediation between India and Pakistan.”
