Speaking in support of the measure, Cooney said the festival marks renewal and community.

“It’s my pleasure to speak in support of the resolution recognizing and celebrating Holi,” Cooney said in a video posted on X. “Holi, known as the Festival of Colors, signals the coming of spring, celebrates vibrancy, promise and the possibility that the season brings.”

He noted that the festival is celebrated around the world, including in New York.

“As many of you know, our AAPI community is the fastest growing population in the state and throughout our nation,” he said. “Meaning more and more South Asians and Hindus are choosing New York to call home.”

In a post on X, Cooney wrote, “This week I was honored to help recognize Holi with a Senate Resolution. Grateful for the opportunity to highlight this vibrant holiday and share my AAPI heritage with a tradition that brings our community together.”

The Consulate General of India in New York welcomed the resolution and thanked Cooney for introducing it and recognizing the cultural traditions and contributions of the Indian American community in New York state.
