Kansas hosts 4th annual Gatka refresher course

Event brought together Gatka coaches, referees and judges for training and certification.

The Gatka Federation USA, in collaboration with the Kansas Gatka Association, organized the 4th US National Gatka Coaching and Refresher Course 2025 at Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar, Overland Park, Kansas. 

According to organizers,the refresher course was designed to prepare coaches, referees and judges for forthcoming seminars, tournaments and the National Gatka Championships.The Kansas state team will compete in the 4th National Gatka Championship in New York on Oct. 4.

Harbhajan Singh of North Carolina and Gurvinder Kaur of Kansas said the camp also focused on promoting awareness of Gatka as a Sikh martial art among younger generations. They observed that participation from women has been steadily rising.

Deep Singh, general secretary of the World Gatka Federation and Gatka Federation USA, in his role as technical director of the International Gatka Championship Organizing Committee, led technical sessions for referees and judges. 

He said the refresher course sought to enhance understanding of Gatka’s heritage while also supporting participants’ physical and emotional development.

Gurvinder Kaur, Harbhajan Singh and Manjashanpreet Singh were designated as national-level referees and judges, while Jasved Singh, Anahad Singh, Kulrajpreet Kaur and Ekamjot Singh completed the program for future roles.Committee members, officials, players and members of the local Sikh community attended the event.

Gatka, a traditional martial art associated with the Sikh community, traces its roots to the Punjab region. Practitioners use wooden sticks, or soti, which simulate swords, often paired with shields for defense. 

The World Gatka Federation works internationally to standardize rules and promote Gatka in competitive formats, while Gatka Federation USA has positioned itself as the lead organization for preserving and advancing Gatka in the United States through training camps, competitions and certification programs.
