Former Vice President Kamala Harris announced a restrained endorsement of Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani’s New York City mayoral bid on Sept. 22.
During an appearance on MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show, Harris stopped short of offering full-throated support for the progressive state assemblyman. “Look, as far as I’m concerned, he’s the Democratic nominee and he should be supported,” Harris said when asked about Mamdani, who defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary.

Pressed again on whether she would formally back him, Harris responded: “I support the Democrat in the race, sure,” before adding, “He’s not the only star… I hope that we don’t so over-index on New York City that we lose sight of the stars throughout our country.”
Harris’s remarks came in her first major television interview since losing the 2024 election to Trump, timed to the release of her memoir 107 Days.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist backed by Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, is facing a three-way contest against incumbent Mayor Eric Adams and Cuomo, both running as independents.
Recent polls show Mamdani with a lead, though his path remains complicated by hesitation from senior Democrats. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries have yet to endorse, reflecting unease over his platform and its potential national impact.
Governor Kathy Hochul endorsed Mamdani earlier this month, arguing his focus on affordability makes him best positioned to counter Donald Trump’s influence.
The November election is shaping up as a pivotal contest: for Adams, a referendum on his turbulent first term; for Cuomo, a chance at political comeback; and for Mamdani, a potential historic victory that could reverberate nationally, giving progressives a high-profile win in America’s largest city.
