New York State Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar announced free online English classes for adults in Queens, aimed at improving job prospects for immigrant communities.

The classes, open to adults aged 18 and older, will begin March 10 and are being offered in partnership with Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow (OBT).

Rajkumar, who represents the diverse District 38 in Queens, said the initiative is intended to help immigrants strengthen English language skills while continuing to value their native languages and cultural identities.

She noted that her district is home to a wide range of linguistic communities and said multilingualism remains an important part of its identity. “In my district, we celebrate Spanish, Bangla, Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu, and the many languages that make our community vibrant,” she said.

At the same time, Rajkumar said learning English can create additional economic opportunities for immigrants. She said English proficiency can “open additional doors to better jobs, higher wages, and new opportunities.”

In a bilingual message, Rajkumar described English as “una herramienta más para avanzar — sin perder nuestras raíces,” describing it as another tool for progress without losing cultural roots.

Rajkumar also referred to her background, saying her family’s immigrant experience shaped her approach to the initiative. “As the daughter of immigrants representing a district of immigrants, I know that every language we speak is a strength,” she said.
