Indian-origin U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal has issued a statement denouncing the Trump administration’s announcement to suspend the issuance of Immigrant Visas for 75 countries.
A State Department spokesperson informed on Jan. 14 that Trump's administration will suspend processing for immigrant visas for applicants from 75 countries as part of Washington's immigration crackdown. The process will begin on Jan. 21.

This move will impact applicants from South Asian countries, Pakistan and Bangladesh, Latin American countries, including Brazil, Colombia, and Uruguay, Balkan countries such as Bosnia and Albania, and those from many nations in Africa, the Middle East, and the Caribbean.
While there has not been a public explanation on how the list of these 75 nations was determined, India has currently not been named among them, and Indians’ respective immigration procedures will not be directly affected.
However, concerns have surfaced that a potential expansion of the list in the future might include India, especially amid the anti-Indian rhetoric around immigration in the U.S.
Jayapal, a ranking member of the Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement Subcommittee, condemned this decision by the Trump administration and wrote,
“Every day, the Trump administration and the Republican Party continue to show the American people they oppose all forms of immigration. Trump is once again using lies, racism, and xenophobia to block entire groups of people from coming and contributing to this country.”
“Today’s announcement will largely impact and target family immigration, which includes people who are married to U.S. citizens. These people have done everything right.”
Jayapal concluded her statement by mentioning the decision to be ‘cruel,’ and must be ‘immediately reversed.’
“They have followed the law, many have waited in backlogs for years, and are so close to being reunited with their loved ones, only to have Trump pull the rug out from under them at the last second. It is just cruel. This stunning new policy will keep families separated indefinitely. It must be immediately reversed,” wrote Jayapal.
Since the beginning of the year, the Trump administration has continued to heavily prioritize immigration enforcement, sending federal agents to major U.S. cities and sparking violent confrontations with both migrants and the nation’s citizens.
