Jaspreet Singh, a New Jersey-based attorney, has been appointed to the Transition Advisory Council for Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill’s incoming administration, state officials announced. He is the only Sikh and the first Punjabi immigrant named to the core advisory group.
The council was formed by Sherrill to help shape governance, policy, and administrative priorities before she takes office. Singh, who migrated to the United States decades ago, has built a long career in immigration law and is well known within New Jersey’s Punjabi and Sikh communities. He previously donated Rs 3 crore to establish the Guru Nanak Chair at a university.
Sherrill’s team said the council will assist the governor-elect with early decision-making and prepare the ground for her administration.
Singh studied law at university and later established his practice in the United States. Community leaders said his appointment reflects both his professional record and his standing among local residents.
Congratulations, Sardar Jaspreet Singh, on your appointment to New Jersey’s Governor-Elect Mikie Sherrill’s Transition team!

Former Lok Sabha member Sukhbir Singh Badal wrote on X that Singh’s selection is “a great milestone that highlights your exceptional leadership and community impact.” He noted Singh’s “over two decades of expertise in immigration law, citizenship, and deportation defense.”
Badal said Singh’s journey from a Guru Nanak Dev University alumnus to a member of a U.S. transition team is significant for the Punjabi diaspora. He added that the appointment is “truly inspiring—not just for the Punjabi diaspora, but for all who value integrity, vision, and public service.”
