Indian priest appointed archbishop in Canada
Jesu currently serves as provincial councillor and Parish Priest of the Sacred Heart of the First Peoples in the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Edmonton.

Indian priest Susai Jesu, a member of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, was appointed Metropolitan Archbishop of Keewatin–Le Pas in Canada.
The appointment, announced by Pope Leo XIV on Nov.17, was confirmed by the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India in a statement.

Jesu currently serves as Provincial Councillor and Parish Priest of the Sacred Heart of the First Peoples in the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Edmonton. He succeeds a seat that has been vacant since the transfer of Archbishop Murray Chatlain to the Archdiocese of Winnipeg in December 2024.
Born on May 17, 1971, in Pushpavanam, Tamil Nadu, Jesu studied philosophy at the Pontifical Athenaeum Dharmaram Vidya Kshetram in Bengaluru and completed his theology studies at the Khrist Premalaya Institute of Theology in Ashta.
He later earned a master’s degree in pastoral counselling from Saint Paul University in Ottawa. He made his perpetual profession with the Oblates in 2000 and was ordained a priest the same year.
Jesu has served in pastoral roles in both India and Canada. His early assignments included parish ministry in Balaghat in Madhya Pradesh, Surala Kappa in northern India, and Kombadimadurai in Tamil Nadu.
Since moving to Canada, he served as parish priest in Pelican Narrows and Sandy Bay between 2009 and 2015, before taking charge of the Sacred Heart of the First Peoples parish in Edmonton in 2017. He has also been a Provincial Councillor of the Oblates since 2019.
Keewatin–Le Pas is one of Canada’s most remote and geographically vast archdioceses, covering northern areas of Manitoba and Saskatchewan and parts of northwestern Ontario. The region includes Cree, Oji-Cree, Dene, Métis and non-Indigenous communities, and the archdiocese has historically been shaped by missionary work in the North.
