The Association of Indians in America–New York Chapter awarded $10,000 in scholarships to students from low-income families enrolled at Queensborough Community College on March 25.

An effort aimed at strengthening ties with the college, $1,000 was given to each of 10 students enrolled in certificate and associate degree programs at QCC, one of the top-ranked community colleges in the CUNY system.

Former AIA national president Dr. Urmilesh Arya and Dr. Yashpal Arya presented the scholarship check to QCC President Dr. Christine Mangino, thanking her and her team for the growing partnership with AIA-NY.

They were joined at the ceremony by AIA-NY President Beena Kothari, former president Dr. Jagdish Gupta, and community leaders including Dr. Nirmal K. Mattoo, chairman of the Indo American Arts Council.

The organization has been collaborating with the college since last year, including the establishment of the Student Success Scholarship Fund, supported by AIA-NY leadership, the Arya Family Foundation, and Dr. Jagdish Gupta.

Over the past year, 31 QCC students have received scholarships during Holi and Diwali celebrations on campus, reflecting “AIA-NY’s ongoing dedication to educational empowerment and community upliftment,” the organization said in a statement.

In addition to scholarships, AIA-NY and QCC have jointly celebrated cultural events including Holi and Diwali, bringing together students, faculty, families, and community leaders through music, dance, and cultural exchange.

The joint Holi celebration saw participation from about 75 students of Indian origin, along with nearly 50 community leaders, including AIA National President Nilima Madan, past president Gobind Munjal, Dr. Raj Modi, Harsh Vyas, Anita Thakkar, and newspaper editors Sunil Hali and Jasbir Jay Singh.

“This collaboration with QCC marks a significant milestone in AIA-NY’s mission to strengthen educational access while preserving and celebrating Indian heritage through meaningful community engagement,” the organization said.

Founded in 1967, the AIA-NY chapter is one of the oldest Indian American community organizations in the United States, promoting cultural heritage, education, and community service through programs, scholarships, and events.
