An Indian-origin woman and man were charged with the murder of a three-year-old girl in west London, nearly two years after her death, on Sept. 26.
The accused have been named as Manpreet Jatana, 34, and Jaskiret Singh Uppal, 36, both residents of Pennine Way, Hayes. They appeared before Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court on Sept. 26.
Following consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), the case will now proceed under its prosecution for the murder of three-year-old Penelope Chandrie.
Under UK law, murder is an indictable-only offence, meaning it can only be tried at Crown Court, where a trial date will be set after transfer from the magistrates’ court.
The case dates back to December 17, 2023, when emergency services were called to a property on Pennine Way in Hayes and found Penelope Chandrie deceased. Her death remained under investigation until the arrests on Sept. 25.
