The Consulate General of India in Houston celebrated Maharashtra and Gujarat Day on May 9 with cultural performances and participation from Indian diaspora organizations across the region.
The event, originally scheduled for May 1, was later rescheduled, the Consulate said in a statement shared on social media. The celebrations saw participation from organizations including Houston Maharashtra Mandal, Vadtal Dham, BAPS, Leva Patidar Samaj and United Leva Samaj.

The program featured cultural performances representing Maharashtra and Gujarat, showcasing folk traditions, music and artistic heritage from both states.
Addressing the gathering, Consul General D.C. Manjunath highlighted the cultural, economic and spiritual contributions of Maharashtra and Gujarat and praised the Indian diaspora for strengthening ties between India and the United States while remaining connected to their roots.
“The celebration featured captivating cultural performances from Maharashtra and Gujarat, beautifully depicting the rich traditions, artistic heritage, and vibrant spirit of both states,” the Consulate said in its statement.
Maharashtra Day and Gujarat Day are observed annually on May 1 to mark the creation of the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat in 1960 following the bifurcation of the Bombay State along linguistic lines.
Houston is home to one of the largest Indian diaspora communities in the southern United States.
