Indian American Mayor of Richmond has made a smooth transition from healthcare to public life

It has been a year since Danny Avula took office as the 81st Mayor of Richmond, Virginia. A pediatrician at Chippenham Hospital, Mayor Avula’s transition to public life was a natural evolution of his work in clinical medicine and public health.
“The role that I have played as a physician has largely been in the public eye. I have realized that with medicine, in addition to seeing patients, I was also interested in macro issues around health outcomes and health behaviors and health policy. So, I ended up doing a residency first in pediatrics and then in public health and preventive medicine. I got my master’s in public health, and I came back to Richmond and joined the health department at that time,” said Avula, who moved to the city 25 years ago for medical school and later chose to plant roots and raise his family in there.
