George Mason elects Sumeet Shrivastava as rector
Shrivastava takes over the board's top leadership role after years of service to the university.

George Mason University has elected technology executive and alumnus Sumeet Shrivastava as rector of its Board of Visitors.
Shrivastava, who previously served as vice rector, was elected during the Board of Visitors' first meeting of the 2026-27 fiscal year on July 31. He succeeds to the board's top leadership role as the university advances a new strategic plan and broader higher education reforms.

Shrivastava has been closely involved with George Mason for years, serving as former chair of the George Mason University Foundation Board of Trustees and past president of the George Mason Alumni Association. He also helped launch the university's Center for Government Contracting and the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
A veteran of the government information technology industry with more than 30 years of experience, Shrivastava is president and CEO of Unissant, a position he has held since July 2024. Before joining Unissant, he was principal at ANSTEC Consulting and previously served as president and CEO of Array Information Technology, where he led the company's growth strategy, oversaw its graduation from federal small business programs, and guided its eventual sale to CGI Federal.
Earlier in his career, Shrivastava held senior leadership positions at Keane Inc., including senior vice president for North American commercial sales and managing director for its federal business. He also served as executive vice president and chief operating officer at ANSTEC, where he helped lead the government IT contractor through its acquisition by Keane.
Speaking after his election, Shrivastava said George Mason is well positioned to help shape the future of higher education amid rapid technological, fiscal and demographic changes.
"George Mason is in a perfect place to execute that," Shrivastava said. "We're a region that's growing. … We're already number one in Virginia for the outcomes families really care about–degree value and upward mobility. Doesn't make the shocks and challenges less real. If we manage them with discipline, and frankly a little obsession–if not a lot of obsession–we help lead [the transformation]. That's how a 50-year-old university becomes the model."
Shrivastava earned a Master of Business Administration from George Mason University's Costello College of Business in 1994 after studying at the University of North Carolina's Kenan-Flagler Business School.
The Board of Visitors also elected Anne Altman as vice rector, Paul Misener as secretary, and Delbert Parks and Jon Peterson as members-at-large. James W. Dyke Jr., who was appointed to the board by Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger in June, attended his first meeting as a Board of Visitors member.
