Fake CIA claim at centre of US fraud and defamation lawsuit

Legal analysts note the case underscores the blurred line between former intelligence professionals now working in the private sector and clients who trade on that reputation.

A Dutch commodities trader has filed a lawsuit in a US federal court accusing a former CIA-linked consultancy of spreading falsehoods on behalf of an Indian businessman who, according to court documents, allegedly posed as an undercover American intelligence operative to defraud him of millions of dollars.

The civil complaint filed in August in the Southern District of New York opens bluntly: “This case may have the hallmarks of a Hollywood film—fake spies, theft, and deceit—but at bottom it is quite simple.”
