CGI NY meets Team USA ahead of Yogasana Championship

The inaugural championship in Ahmedabad is expected to bring together Yogasana athletes from more than 40 countries.

Members of the United States Yogasana team met officials at the Consulate General of India in New York ahead of their participation in the World Yogasana Championship 2026, scheduled to take place in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, from June 4 to 8.

The delegation was led by Balwinder Singh, founder and president of the United States Yoga Association (USYA) and the United States Yogasana Sports Federation (USYSF).

Athletes Kat Walinski, Sanjay Attada, Mirla Pereira, Veronica Vega, Franchhelly Mojica and Sahithi Attada were among those present, along with coaches, judges, officials and volunteers representing the United States.

The meeting was attended by Consul General of India in New York Binaya Srikanta Pradhan, Deputy Consul General Vishal Jayeshbhai Harsh and Consul (Culture) Upendra Singh Negi.

Discussions focused on the growing role of yoga and Yogasana in strengthening cultural and people-to-people ties between India and the United States. The delegation also briefed consular officials on Team USA's preparations for the upcoming championship.

According to the team, the championship represents an opportunity to showcase the growth of Yogasana in the United States and internationally. The role of volunteers, coaches and officials involved in preparing the American contingent for the event, was also recognized during the meeting.

The World Yogasana Championship is expected to bring together athletes from multiple countries to compete in the sport, which combines traditional yoga postures with competitive performance standards.

India unveiled the championship this week as part of a broader push to promote Yogasana internationally and strengthen efforts toward recognition of the discipline as a global competitive sport. Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has also said India will advocate for Yogasana's inclusion in future Olympic competitions.
