Consul General of India in Shanghai Pratik Mathur on May 23 inaugurated the annual East China Indian Diaspora Cricket Tournament along with the curtain raiser event for International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026 .
The event, jointly organized by the Indian Association Shanghai and Nord Anglia International School Shanghai Pudong, saw participation from members of the Indian diaspora, the international community, yoga practitioners, and cricket enthusiasts from across East China.
Addressing the gathering, Mathur conveyed his best wishes to the participants and appreciated the large-scale participation in the IDY 2026 curtain raiser activities. He highlighted the growing global commitment toward yoga as a means of promoting wellness, harmony, and peace.
He also underlined the significance of yoga in advancing India’s wellness traditions globally and noted the increasing international support for India-led initiatives promoting holistic well-being.
Speaking about the cricket tournament, the Consul General expressed happiness over the sport’s cross-cultural appeal, with participants from diverse nationalities and communities taking part in the event. He said the tournament reflected the spirit of friendship, community engagement, and people-to-people connections fostered through sports and wellness initiatives.
The International Day of Yoga, observed annually on June 21 following a United Nations resolution adopted in 2014, has emerged as one of India’s largest global cultural outreach initiatives, with events organized across countries each year.
