Junaid Ahmed, an Indian American Democratic candidate challenging for the nomination in Illinois’ 8th Congressional District, recently announced that his campaign has received the endorsement of U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders.

Ahmed took to X to mention that he is ‘honored’ to receive Sanders’ support in the race to fill the open seat being vacated by outgoing Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, and wrote,

“I could not be more honored to announce that Senator Bernie Sanders has endorsed our campaign to put people before Wall Street in the 8th Congressional District.”

Sanders praised Ahmed’s campaign message of prioritizing “people before Wall Street,” echoing his progressive stances on healthcare, taxation, and campaign finance reform.

In his endorsement remarks, the Vermont senator highlighted principles including healthcare as a human right, making billionaires pay a “fair share,” and removing dark money from politics, themes central to Ahmed’s platform and broader progressive politics.
