In a world where we are witnessing a profound crisis of truth and joy—both in New York City and across the globe—I have found a beacon of hope in Zohran Kwame Mamdani. His New York City Mayoral candidacy represents not merely a challenge to the status quo but also a vision for a more inclusive future where diverse voices are heard, information is trustworthy and all with joy at the center.
Growing up in America, I experienced a time when South Asian challenges were relatively few. However, as a college student in New Jersey during the tumultuous 1980s, I witnessed the emergence of the “Dot Busters”, a violent group targeting individuals of South Asian descent. They instilled fear through derogatory graffiti and physical threats. Tragically, I recognized these youth as products of economic resentment rather than xenophobic, reflecting the societal failures of that time. This experience etched in me a profound understanding of how economic instability can warp perceptions and breed hate.
Today, the challenges we face—particularly in New York—are far deeper and more widespread. Affordability, in particular, looms large over our communities, affecting the very fabric of our society. The mounting pressures of daily life can lead to further alienation, making it essential for us to unify under causes that promote understanding, acceptance, and joy.

In this fragmented political landscape, I often find that those with whom I disagree politically are engaging in news consumption and community activities outside my sphere. The disconnect can feel isolating. However, within the NYC Hindu community, I have discovered that our boundaries are much more porous.
The Hindus for Zohran affinity group offers a unique opportunity to blend political advocacy with cultural identity. Here, I can support Mamdani's vision while promoting the Hindu values of inclusion and representation that resonate deeply with me. This is no longer just about one individual; it's a broader movement towards creating an environment where diverse backgrounds can come together to effect change.
Joining Hindus for Zohran is about amplifying a broader narrative—one that includes the stories of all communities. In supporting Mamdani, I’m aligning myself with a candidate who recognizes the multiplicity of identities that enrich our city. He is a leader who seeks to address the very issues that polarize our society, promoting joy and truth as foundational to meaningful engagement.
I believe in the strength of community, and I am committed to being an active participant in shaping the future of our neighborhoods. The Hindus for Zohran affinity group is not just a political platform; it is a coalition that represents hope, resilience, and the possibility of a harmonious existence.
By joining the Hindus for Zohran affinity group, I am taking a stand—not only for a candidate I believe in but for the principles of truth, joy, and inclusivity that will fortify our community. Together, we can forge a path toward a brighter, more equitable future for all New Yorkers, ensuring that every voice finds its resonance in the chorus of our shared humanity.
While it's clear that the world did not change overnight on October 7, 2023, the events leading up to this moment have brought a profound global awareness to the gravity of our situation. As we approach the two-year anniversary, I’m reflecting on the remarkable acts of forgiveness we’ve recently witnessed in the U.S., arising from two very different groups, both grappling with violence and loss.
