Darshana Patel launches California Indian American Legislative Caucus
The caucus aims to strengthen Indian-American representation, civic engagement and leadership across California through policy advocacy and public service.

The California State Assembly has approved the formation of the California Indian American Legislative Caucus, an official caucus that serves as the collective voice for Indian-American Californians within the State Legislature.
Founded and chaired by Assemblymember Darshana Patel, it was formed to amplify representation across state governments. The caucus focuses on translating the growing demographic presence of the Indian-American community into policy initiatives that directly address key statewide priorities, including public education, healthcare access, and economic development.

To expand its impact beyond Capitol corridors, the caucus has launched the California Indian American Legislative Caucus Foundation. The non-profit organization works alongside lawmakers to facilitate civic engagement, educate the public on legislative developments, and champion community advocacy efforts across California.
A cornerstone initiative of the effort is the Appointments Project, an aggressive recruitment drive designed to place Indian-American professionals on key state boards and commissions. Organizers are targeting critical policy-making bodies governing sectors such as technology, medicine, science, financial oversight, and agriculture. State board vacancies are evaluated routinely by foundation leaders to match high-caliber professionals with open seats.
“Public service is powered by our community,” according to the caucus, which stresses that board appointments provide one of the most direct avenues for expert leaders to help craft state regulation and public strategy.
Prominent leaders on the caucus’ board include Vivek Chhabra, the CEO of 21iQLabs, Anuj Dixit, Papia Gambelin, the Managing Director, State & Local Government Affairs (Western Region), United Airlines, Harini Krishnan, an Elected DNC Member from California, Keshav Kumar Director of Lighthouse Public Affairs, Priya Lakireddy President of Merced City School District Board of Education, Karthick Ramakrishnan, the Founder & Director of AAPI Data, and Jigar Shah, the Managing Director of Alvarez & Marsal.
